RescriptusStart writing

Changelog

What has changed, newest first. Only what a writer would notice.

  • Rescriptus has a public site: this one, with a tour of the features, help articles, and draft privacy and terms pages.
  • The app is now called Rescriptus.
  • You can start writing without an account. Your project stays in your browser, and you choose a sample: a novel, short stories, non-fiction or nothing yet.
  • You can keep your project in a folder on your computer, in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers on a computer. A project kept in this browser comes with you when you move it.
  • Import from Word, Markdown, plain text or a zip, with a preview before anything is added.
  • Export a book as a Word manuscript or an EPUB, with an Export dialog. Markdown and plain text too.
  • Download everything as a zip of plain files, and restore from one.
  • Find and replace in a chapter. Press Ctrl+K to jump to any book, chapter, wiki page or note, or to search your whole project.
  • Bold, italic and scene breaks from the keyboard or the selection menu, and an optional live preview that hides the Markdown symbols.
  • Wiki entries open in a slide-over beside your chapter, so you do not lose your place.
  • Rename, move, delete and duplicate books, chapters, wiki pages, categories, notes and folders, each with an Undo.
  • When a file changes somewhere else, edits to different words are merged without a question. When the same words changed, you can compare the versions side by side and choose.
  • A chapter can be edited in one tab at a time, so two tabs cannot quietly overwrite each other.
  • History shows what changed in each version, and lets you restore the whole version or just one passage.
  • A new look: self-hosted fonts, clearer status marks, light and dark pages, and a calmer editor with a focus mode and collapsible panels.
  • A layout built for phones and tablets: a bottom bar, drawers, a formatting bar above the keyboard and 44-pixel touch targets.
  • One save label, in the same words everywhere. Your words are journalled on your device first, retried on a bad connection, and kept in a recovery page if they cannot be saved anywhere.
  • Names and file names work in any script. Files that are not UTF-8, with a byte order mark, or with Windows line endings are never damaged.
  • Dialogs replace the browser’s own pop-ups, and work with the keyboard and screen readers.
  • Disconnecting from GitHub now removes the project from the device, and can also remove Rescriptus’s access at GitHub.
  • Stricter security: a content security policy, no images loaded from other websites, and rate limits on the sign-in routes.
  • GitHub projects load faster, and idle refreshes cost no GitHub rate limit.
  • Typing stays quick in large projects.

  • Storage on GitHub: sign in with GitHub and keep your project in a repository of your own.
  • In the hosted version, your writing goes from your browser to your storage and not through the server.
  • A fresh start is cleaner: neutral wording, starter wiki categories, generated book covers and empty repositories handled.
  • Fixes for several ways text could be lost in the editor and the file format.
  • Syncing, outside-edit guards, notes and a first phone layout.

  • The writing tool became its own project, with a clean file format and ways to create books, chapters, wiki pages and notes.

  • The first version: a library, a dashboard and a wiki for your story, built as a spike.
