Terms of use
Last updated: {{DATE}}
1. Who we are
Rescriptus is run by {{OPERATOR}} (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at {{CONTACT_EMAIL}}.
2. What Rescriptus is
Rescriptus is a writing tool that runs in your web browser. It reads and saves your writing as files in storage you control: this browser, a folder on your computer, or a GitHub repository. We do not keep your writing. See the privacy policy for what we do handle.
By using Rescriptus you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use it.
3. Accounts, GitHub and your storage
- Rescriptus has no accounts of its own yet. You do not need one to start.
- If you choose GitHub, you need a GitHub account. GitHub’s terms apply to it and to your repository. We are not responsible for GitHub.
- You choose which repositories Rescriptus may access. You can remove that access at any time, in the app or in your GitHub settings.
- Keep your GitHub account and your computer secure. If someone else uses your signed-in browser, they can reach your writing.
- If you use GitHub, you must meet GitHub’s minimum age.
4. Your writing is yours
You own your writing. We claim no rights over it. We do not receive it, so we do not need a licence to it.
You are responsible for what you write and for having the right to write it. That includes personal data about other people in your text.
5. What you must not do
- Break the law, or use Rescriptus to help someone else do so.
- Attack, overload or probe the service, or try to get at other people’s data.
- Use Rescriptus to store or share material that is illegal in the United Kingdom.
We can stop your access to Rescriptus if you do. This does not touch your files.
6. The service as it is
Rescriptus is new software, and is in beta. It may have bugs and it will change. We try to keep it running, but we do not promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may add, change or remove features. If we plan to shut the service down, we will give notice and tell you how to take your files. (They are already in your own storage, and you can download everything as a zip at any time.)
7. Back up your work
Rescriptus is built to avoid losing your words, but no software can promise that. Keep your own backups. Do not rely on Rescriptus, or on the copy in your browser, as the only place your book exists.
- A project kept in this browser lives only in this browser. Clearing the browser’s data deletes it. Use Download everything to keep a copy.
- A folder has no history of its own. Your usual backup tool is the safety net.
- On GitHub, your repository’s history is a safety net, and GitHub holds it.
- Anything not yet sent to your storage lives only in your browser until it is sent. The save label shows what is waiting. Leaving the page, clearing your browser’s data or switching device before it is sent can lose those edits.
8. Limits on our responsibility
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
Subject to that, and to the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for loss of data or writing, or for loss of profit or income, that results from using Rescriptus; and
- our total liability to you for anything connected with Rescriptus is limited to {{LIABILITY_LIMIT}}.
9. Free while in beta
Rescriptus is free while it is in beta. There are no paid plans yet. If that changes, the terms for paid plans will be written here first, and downloading your files will stay free.
10. Privacy
Our privacy policy explains what we handle. It forms part of these terms.
11. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. We will tell you in the app before a change that matters takes effect. If you carry on using Rescriptus after that, you accept the new terms.
12. Law and courts
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you may also use your local courts. The courts of England and Wales can hear disputes, unless the law gives you a right to go elsewhere.
13. Contact and complaints
Write to {{CONTACT_EMAIL}}. We will try to put things right.
