Notes
Outlines, research and ideas in folders, plus notes you leave to yourself inside a chapter.
Notes are for everything that is not a chapter or a wiki page: outlines, research, ideas, a style guide.
Make a note
- Open Notes in the top bar (on a phone, in the bottom bar).
- Choose New note.
- Give it a title and choose a folder.
Notes sit in a tree of folders. Open one to read it. Choose Edit to change it. Notes are written in Markdown: headings, lists, links, bold, italic and tables.
You can rename, move and delete notes, and rename, move and delete folders. Deleting shows an Undo button for a few seconds.
Saving
Like chapters, notes save as you type. See Saving, and what happens offline.
The Conflicts folder
If a file changed somewhere else while you were typing, and you choose Keep both, your text is saved as a copy in Notes, Conflicts. See When a file changes somewhere else.
Images and links
Links work as normal. Images that live on other websites are not shown: the app's security settings stop your browser loading them, so that opening a note never tells another website you were there.
Notes inside a chapter
You can leave a note to yourself in the middle of a chapter, such as a reminder to check a date. Type it as a comment:
<!--@note check the tide times-->
It shows as a small marker in the text. It does not count as words, readers of the plain file do not see it as prose, and it is left out when you export a book.
History
On GitHub, every note keeps its earlier versions. See History and restoring.
