Exporting and downloading everything

A Word manuscript, an EPUB, Markdown or plain text from any book, and a zip of your whole project.

Getting your work out never needs our permission or our software. There are two ways.

Export a book

On a book's page, choose Export…. The dialog shows the chapter and word count, then offers:

Format Good for
Word manuscript Standard manuscript layout, for agents and editors. Choose A4 or US Letter; the choice is remembered for that book
EPUB E-readers. Straight quotes become curly quotes in the file, and your chapters are not changed
Markdown One file, no notes or marks
Plain text One file, no formatting

You can include or leave out chapter titles. The dialog says what is left out of the file, and which empty chapters are skipped.

Exports contain the live version of each passage. They leave out status marks, undecided alternates and notes you left in the text. Your own chapters are never changed by exporting.

The files are made in your browser, and download straight to your device.

There is no PDF export. Word and EPUB are the formats for sending a manuscript out. Most tools can make a PDF from a Word file.

Download everything

On the storage page (the gear button), Download everything gives you a zip of the whole project exactly as it is stored: chapters, wiki and notes, including anything not yet sent to your storage. It is plain Markdown and YAML, so it opens in any editor.

Restore from a zip puts a download back. It adds and changes files and never deletes.

Where the files are

If your project is on GitHub or in a folder, the files are already there to copy:

  • Chapters are Markdown files under books, in a folder per book. They are numbered in steps of ten so the order is clear.
  • Story wiki pages are in a folder per category.
  • Notes are in the notes folder.

Chapter files contain Rescriptus's marks, written as HTML comments, and any undecided alternates. They are invisible in most Markdown viewers. Use the export, or resolve your alternates, before you send a file out.
