Planning, goals and progress

Plan a book on a board of cards, set word goals, and see how much you have written each day.

Plan the book

On a book's page, choose Plan the book. In a chapter, the Plan button in the top bar does the same.

  • Cards show each chapter as a card with a synopsis, its words and how finished it is. Outline shows the same as a compact table. Your choice is remembered on this device.
  • Chapters are grouped by part. Drag a card to reorder, or use its Move up and Move down buttons.
  • Click a synopsis to write or change it.
  • A chapter can have a word target. The card then shows a bar of words towards it.
  • The filter above the board finds chapters by words in the title or synopsis, point of view, tag or status.
  • Parts show on the book's page too, with the chapters and words in each, and beside each chapter its point of view and synopsis. In the chapter list beside the editor, click a part's name to fold it away; the chapter you have open always stays in view. This is remembered on this device.

Scenes, splitting and merging

A line with just * * * (or ***, ---) between two paragraphs is a scene break. On the plan, a card's … menu has Show scenes: each scene with its first words and word count. Split here makes everything from that scene onwards a new chapter right after this one, taking the status and part with it, and the marks and alternates stay with their words. Merge with the next chapter joins two chapters with a scene break between; the second one's synopsis and details go. Both can be undone straight afterwards. In a chapter, the Details tab links to its scenes on the plan.

Word goals for a book

On a book's page, choose Edit details. You can set a word goal for the book, with common lengths to pick from, and an optional deadline. With a deadline, the book's page shows the words a day you need.

Language and word counts

Language in the same dialog is a short code such as en-GB, fr, ja or zh-Hans. It tells your browser which language to spell-check, sets the language of Word and EPUB files you export, and decides how words are counted for languages written without spaces.

Every count in Rescriptus (the page footer, goals, your progress, the library and the book's page) comes from one rule. Words are the runs of text between spaces, as in a word processor, and dashes or bullets standing alone are not words. Chinese, Japanese and Thai are split into words by your browser's own dictionary, so a page of Japanese counts as many words rather than one. Korean is written with spaces and counts as it is written. A browser too old to know how to split them counts each Chinese character and Japanese kana as a word.

Right to left

Arabic and Hebrew lines begin on the right, and each line takes its direction from its own first strong letter, so mixed text sits correctly. Notes and wiki pages do the same. If a book's language is Arabic or Hebrew, Word files are marked right to left and EPUB paragraphs follow the text.

Your progress

Choose Your progress in the … menu (Settings, help and appearance). The page shows the words you wrote today, the last 7 and 30 days, and a chart of each day across all your books. Deleting text counts against the day.

Set a daily goal there. Your streak then counts the days you met it. You can hide the streak if it does not help you.

The counts are saved in your project, in a file called progress.yml, so they follow it to another device.

Library order

On the library page, the Sort menu puts your books in order of recently opened, title or progress.
