Importing your writing

Bring in Word, Markdown, text files or a zip, with a preview before anything is added.

You do not have to start from nothing. Rescriptus can bring in writing you already have.

What it accepts

  • Word documents (.docx)
  • Markdown and plain text files
  • A zip of those. A folder from Obsidian works too. Hidden and system files in the zip are ignored.

Several files at once are fine. Files in a zip are read in path order, with numbers compared as numbers, so chapter 2 comes before chapter 10.

How to import

  1. On the library page, choose Import….
  2. Choose your files. Rescriptus reads them and shows a preview. Nothing is added until you click Import.
  3. Choose how to cut the text into chapters: by Heading 1, by Heading 2, at page breaks and "Chapter N" lines, or one chapter per file. Each option shows how many chapters it would make.
  4. Choose where they go: a new book (give it a title and author) or an existing book.
  5. Untick any chapter you do not want, and fix titles if you like.
  6. Choose Import. You land on the book.

What gets tidied

Rescriptus cleans the text so it reads well in Markdown. It tells you what it changed and warns you about anything it was unsure of. A text file that is not UTF-8 is read as Windows-1252 text, with a warning to check the accents. Other scene-break styles become a single line with * * *.

Statuses and alternates

Imported text arrives without marks. Mark it up in the editor as you go. See Statuses explained.

Restoring a zip from Rescriptus itself

That is a different thing. Restore from a zip on the storage page puts a project you downloaded from Rescriptus back exactly as it was. See Choosing where your writing lives.
