Choosing where your writing lives

This browser, a folder on your computer, or GitHub: what each one is for, and how to move between them.

Rescriptus saves your project as ordinary files. You choose where. You can change your mind later: open Settings (the gear button) to see the storage page.

In this browser

The quickest start. Your project is kept in this browser, on this device, and nowhere else. No account is needed.

  • It is fine for trying things out and for writing on one device.
  • It lives in the browser's own storage, so clearing the site's data in your browser deletes it. Download a copy now and then (see below).
  • It has no version history of its own. Rescriptus asks the browser to keep the project when space runs low, but a browser may still decline.

A folder on your computer

Plain files in a folder you choose, for example one that Dropbox, OneDrive or iCloud Drive already syncs. Nothing leaves your computer and no account is needed.

  • This works in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers on a computer. Other browsers, and phones, cannot open a folder. The page tells you if yours cannot.
  • A folder has no version history of its own. Your usual backup or sync tool is the safety net.
  • Pick a folder of its own. If the folder already holds other Markdown files, Rescriptus warns you, because it would treat each one as a note. It offers to make a new folder inside it instead.
  • Your browser may ask you to allow access again after you restart it.

GitHub

Your project in a repository on GitHub, with every save kept as a version you can go back to. You can open the same project on any device you sign in from. It needs a free GitHub account. See Connecting GitHub.

Google Drive

Coming. It is not available yet.

Moving between them

On the storage page, pick the new place. If your project is kept in this browser, Rescriptus offers to copy it across, so it does not get left behind. Files in the new place with the same names are replaced. Nothing else there is touched.

Your files, whichever you choose

The storage page has Download everything, a zip of the whole project exactly as it is stored, and Restore from a zip, which puts one back (it adds and changes files, and never deletes). Do this now and then whichever storage you use.
