Maps

Put a picture of a world, a city or a ship in your story wiki and pin pages to it, so you can find them by where they are.

A map is a page in your story wiki with a picture on it and pins on the picture. Each pin opens another wiki page: a town, a character's house, a ship's cargo hold, or another map, so a map of the world can lead to a map of a city. Nothing about it leaves your storage: the picture is a file in your project, like any wiki picture.

Make a map

A new project has a Maps category. Choose New entry, pick Maps, give the map a name, then choose Choose a picture in the page's details. A PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF up to 5 MB works. Rescriptus keeps the file exactly as you chose it. The picture appears above the page's text, with the buttons for working on it.

An older project. Rescriptus never rewrites your categories, so a project made before maps existed does not have the category. Choose Add from a template on the wiki page, then Maps, then Add 1 category. Fiction and Worldbuilding have it too. Or make a category of your own: in its settings choose Add field, set the kind to Pins on a picture, and add a Picture field beside it. Any category with a field of that kind makes maps.

Pins

  • Looking. Each pin is a numbered dot on the picture. Point at it, or Tab to it, and it shows the name of the page it opens. Click it to open that page. Under the picture a list names every pin by number, with the page it opens and where it sits, so a crowded map is still easy to read.
  • Edit pins turns on changes. Click the picture to put a pin where you clicked, then choose the page it opens. Drag a pin to move it. In the list, Change page points a pin at another page and Remove takes it off. Done turns changes off again.
  • With the keyboard. In edit mode choose Add a pin: a new pin appears in the middle. Move it with the arrow keys (Shift for bigger steps) and press Enter to place it, then choose its page. To move a pin that is already there, Tab to it and use the arrow keys. Escape gives up on a pin you have not placed yet.
  • Any page. A pin can open a character, a group, a piece of lore or another map as well as a place. The box that asks which page also lets you make a new page from the name you type.
  • Zoom and move around. The + and − buttons zoom, Fit shows the whole picture again, and on a touch screen you can pinch to zoom and drag to move. On a computer, hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and turn the wheel. The pins stay the same size however close you look.

On the other pages

A page that has a pin on a map lists that map under On maps, with the number of its pin, so you can see where something is from its own page.

If a page changes

  • Rename or move a page and every pin that opens it follows.
  • Delete a page and its pins stay where they were, marked as pointing at a page that has been deleted. The list says so and has a Remove button, or you can choose another page for it.
  • Take the picture away, or choose another. The pins stay. They are kept as fractions of the picture (how far across and how far down), not as pixels, so a new picture of the same shape keeps them where they were.
  • The picture counts as used by Unused pictures… (see The story wiki), so it is never offered for deleting while a map uses it.

Where it is stored

A map is a Markdown file like any wiki page. Its header holds the picture's path and the pins:

picture: codex/_images/the-reach-1a2b3c4d.png
pins:
  - x: 0.62
    y: 0.28
    to: places/the-lighthouse

x runs from 0 on the left to 1 on the right, y from 0 at the top to 1 at the bottom, and to is the page, as every link detail writes it. You can edit it by hand. A pin that Rescriptus cannot read is left exactly as written, listed under the picture as one it cannot read, and can be removed from there.
