Getting started
Open Rescriptus, pick a starting point and write your first chapter. No account needed.
Rescriptus is a place to write a book. Your chapters, story wiki and notes are plain Markdown files that you keep in your own storage. Rescriptus does not keep a copy of your writing on its servers.
The first five minutes
- Choose Start writing on the home page. You land on a page that asks where your writing should live.
- Choose In this browser to begin at once. It needs no account. (You can pick GitHub or a folder instead. See Choosing where your writing lives.)
- Say what you are writing: a novel, short stories, non-fiction, or nothing yet. Rescriptus adds a short sample book that shows how things work. Change it or delete it whenever you like.
- Open a chapter and type. There is no save button. See Saving, and what happens offline.
The three parts of a project
- Library and books. Each book holds chapters in order. Add, rename, reorder and delete chapters from the chapter list.
- Story wiki. A page for each character, place or idea. See The story wiki.
- Notes. Outlines, research and anything else. See Notes.
What makes it different
- Mark how finished any passage is: Statuses explained.
- Keep two versions of a passage side by side: Alternates.
- Find anything with Ctrl+K: Search, find and replace, and shortcuts.
- Take your work with you at any time: Importing and Exporting.
The help button
The ? button in the app opens a one-page summary of the same ideas, right where you are writing.
